To Thanhlam, from Thuylam
An exhibit created by designer Mikayla Tseng takes its viewers on a journey through its creator's life. A life that has battled with the duality of cultural traditions and the struggles of finding oneself. The traditional, yet not so traditional Ao Dai displayed at the forefront represents the artist's journey growing up with Chinese and Vietnamese values in American society. The use of knitted materials and a unique spin on a traditional design shows the artist's dichotomy of life. The elegant nature of this project represents the acceptance of identity and the true beauty of traditions. This project is an tribute to Mikayla's parents, who once sacrificed everything to provide for her and allowed her to experience things for herself, which made her the person she is today.
