We live in a world where women walk down the street with fear if they are wearing a skirt; in a world where the patriarchy rules our daily lives; in a world where 1 in 3 women are sexually assaulted every day.
Sexual harassment is a form of violence that occurs in different contexts and can affect people of any gender. Despite this – on many occasions – victims of sexual harassment are blamed for their own involvement. In particular, they are shamed for the way they were dressed at the time of the sexual harassment. This type of accusation is inappropriate and unfair, contributing to rape culture.
This culture is based on the idea that people have the right to dominate and control another person's body, especially if that person is dressed in a way considered "provocative." This type of thinking is dangerous because it justifies sexual violence and makes victims feel responsible for their own sexual harassment.
The artist’s goal with Shame on You is for people to recognize that the way a person dresses does not justify sexual harassment – this illegal behavior must be strongly condemned, no matter the circumstances in which it occurs.
Instead of blaming victims for their own experiences, it is important to support and believe them. Rape culture can be difficult to combat, but it is possible if steps are taken to educate society about the importance of consent, gender equality, and respect for others.
